We designed a signal processing circuit board that performs digital filtering of an encoder signal to eliminate undesired frequency modulations. This work included developing software algorithms for the digital filtering operation. The Texas Instruments TMS320C25 digital signal processor (DSP) was used. A high-speed digital frequency synthesizer was created to reconstruct the filtered encoder signal. Self-calibration functions and diagnostic read-back paths were incorporated into the design. The finished board had a 6U by 160 mm form factor and was fully Versa Module Europa (VME)-compliant.
